6 Incoming QBs - Strengths and Weaknesses


2014, like every year, has plenty of solid QBs that may impact the NFL right out of College. Here is a list of 6 interesting gunslingers' strengths and weaknesses coming into the draft in May.

TEDDY BRIDGEWATER, QB - LOUISVILLE  - JUNIOR  - HEIGHT/WEIGHT: 6-2 / 214 LBS

STRENGTHS:
1) Impressive accuracy and touch on throws to anywhere on the field, even when flushed
2) Mature, intelligent, makes others better and loves football
3) Excellent technique
4) Tough and able to bounce back after big hits
5) Played well when facing blitzes
6) Worked in pro-style offense at Louisville
7) Good getting through his progressions
8) Manipulates defenses with his eyes

WEAKNESSES:
1) Low release point
2) Durability concerns after due to hits he has taken over his career
3) Played against mediocre talent in the AAC

BLAKE BORTLES, QB - UCF  -  JUNIOR  - HEIGHT/WEIGHT: 6-5 / 232 LBS

STRENGTHS:
1) Strong competitor and exudes toughness, leadership and confidence
2) NFL-build
3) Very athletic
4) Climbs well
5) Terrific peripheral
6) Smooth release with good zip
7) Coachable with a high football IQ

WEAKNESSES:
1) Ball placement and touch
2) Throwing mechanics
3) Learn to use his eyes to hold defenders
4) Ball security

JOHNNY MANZIEL, QB - TEXAS A&M  - SOPHOMORE  - HEIGHT/WEIGHT: 6-0 / 207 LBS

STRENGTHS:
1) Dynamic playmaker
2) Remarkable maneuverability
3) Excellent agility
4) Incredible spatial awareness
5) Improved velocity and placement
6) Highly competitive performer
7) Proven production and ability to produce in big moments.

WEAKNESSES:
1) Tendency to fall off his throws
2) Relies on his WRs to make plays in jump-ball situations.
3) String of off-field issues brings into question

DEREK CARR, QB - FRESNO STATE  - SENIOR  - HEIGHT/WEIGHT: 6-2 / 214 LBS.

STRENGTHS:
1) NFL-caliber arm strength
2) Astute ability to read coverages
3) Good vision
4) Lateral agility and
5) Speed to elude

WEAKNESSES:
1) Played primarily out of the shotgun
2) Struggled against better competition
3) Will rush passes when blitzed
 4) Accuracy was inconsistent

JIMMY GAROPPOLO, QB - EASTERN ILLINOIS  - SENIOR  - HEIGHT/WEIGHT: 6-2 / 226 LBS.

STRENGTHS:
1) Good, not great, size
2) Live arm
3) Excellent passing vision
4) Quick intellectual process
5) Above average timing
6) Strong leadership presence

WEAKNESSES:
1) Lack of elite velocity
2) Needs to improve his decision-making
3) Almost side-arm motion
4) Holds the ball too long
5) Needs under-center snaps

AJ MCCARRON, QB - ALABAMA - SENIOR - HEIGHT/WEIGHT: 6-3 / 220 LBS.

STRENGTHS:
1) Balanced passer and gets into a rhythm
2) Sees the field well
3) Good timing and accuracy
4) Throws a very catchable ball with touch
5) Confident leader with professional intangibles.

WEAKNESSES:
1) Average body type and build
2) Lacks an elite arm with average-at-best velocity on downfield throws 
3) Drops his eye level prematurely
4) Pre-snap reads are a work-in-progress
5) Durability concerns
